Effective January 1, 2026, certain Toucan products sold in California will include a Covered Battery-Embedded Product Recycling Fee. This fee is mandated by Senate Bill (SB) 1215, which updates California’s Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 to include products with embedded, non-easily-removable batteries.

What is SB1215?

SB1215 requires a recycling fee on products that contain batteries not designed to be easily removed by the user with common household tools. The law aims to reduce fire risks and ensure safe recycling.

How the Fee Works

- Starts January 1, 2026
- Collected at checkout as a separate line item
- Fee amount set by CalRecycle and may adjust annually

- July 1, 2025: Manufacturers notify retailers and CalRecycle of covered products
- October 1, 2025: CalRecycle sets the fee
